Madeirans love fireworks – so it’s no surprise that Funchal is the most popular city in Portugal for celebrating New Year’s Eve. Madeira even entered the Guinness book of World Records in 2009 for staging the largest and most spectacular fireworks display in the world !
You could stay at one of our quintas in Funchal: completely immersing yourselves in the party atmosphere as the week-long celebrations build up to midnight on the 31st. The entire island descends on the city for the big event – families and friends gather on every rooftop and balcony, and Funchal’s bay fills with cruise ships bringing travellers from around the world to enjoy the festivities. On the stroke of twelve, the cruise ships sound their sirens and every church bell rings out as the epic firework display begins.
We also find it’s quite nice staying outside of the city: to have a break from the festivities, but still keeping the city a short drive away. A good option is the beautiful Hotel Quinta da Serra; a peaceful rural hotel high in the hills of Jardim de Serra, renown for its Christmas and New Year Gala dinners which showcase the island’s best seasonal produce.
With this holiday, we’ve suggested visiting for New Year but it’s easy to extend your stay if you’d like to spend Christmas and New Year on the island – just fill in one of our Enquiry forms and we’ll give you a call to chat through the possibilities.
