Overview
The Estalagem do Vale has been many things through its 150-year lifespan.
The main house was originally constructed as a private country residence, before being repurposed a school and even a much-need hospital for the local residents of Sao Vicente. Nowadays, the historic main house is home to the Estalagem’s five Superior rooms. They have a very homely-feel and retain many of the original features of the manor house; their high ceilings, pretty cornicing and georgian-esque sash windows complimented by carefully chosen traditional-style furniture. In a nice contrast, the standard rooms in the Estalagem’s new wing are a much-more modern option – their wooden floors and pastel-shades reflect the classic-feel of the superior room, but with a cleaner, more contemporary style. Standard rooms also come with their own private balconies, looking out over the breathtaking Ribeira de Sao Vicente valley.
There is also an outdoor pool and wellness centre, and the excellent ‘O Caramujo’ restaurant serves delicious Madeiran dishes, accompanied by a great selection of Madeiran and Portuguese wines. You can also book a cooking class with Head-chef Roberto, using the best local produce to prepare your own traditional Madeiran dishes.
