Overview

Our ten-night Madeira Family Activity Holiday is the perfect mix of down-time and adventure.

Madeira’s reputation as the action capital of Portugal is well-deserved. The island is a playground for anyone that loves outdoor pursuits – from mountain biking and canyoning, to whale watching and paddle boarding.

That’s not say you can’t spend the day relaxing by the pool: the beauty of our Madeira Family Activity Holiday is in its careful balance of excursions and free time – time to explore the magnificent mountain peaks, secluded valleys and sea-torn cliffs which make this island such a beautiful and unique holiday destination.

Home is the ocean view Quinta Girassol – our three-bedroom family villa, with an outdoor pool and terrace overlooking the sunny south coast village of Ponta do Sol. We’ll also include a hire car to help you get around, and we’ll suggestion a few of our favourite things to see and do around your guided trips. We’ve based this trip around a ten-night stay for a family of four, but it’s easy to extend your holiday to a full two weeks – or you could split your stay between Madeira and the beach-island of Porto Santo.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a flight to Madeira. You’ll collect a hire car on arrival before driving along the south coast to your villa in Ponta do Sol.
You’ll head to the marina in Calheta for a whale and dolphin watching trip. The waters around Madeira are one of the best places to observe Atlantic spotted dolphins, sperm whales, loggerhead turtles and Cory's shearwaters. Whale tourism is key to the ecology of the Atlantic, helping to support cetacean studies and conservation.
You might like to drive into Funchal: capital of Madeira and the island’s bustling, cultural centre where you can visit the Se Cathedral, Blandy’s wine lodge and the Zona Velha old town district. In the afternoon, you could take the cable car up to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, returning on the famous Carro de Cesto wicker toboggans.
You’ll take a drive north, via the Encumeada tunnel to Sao Vicente, the Casacata Veu da Noiva waterfall and Porto Moniz: one of the best swimming spots on the island.
You’ll spend today with our resident mountain biking guides in the forests of Pico da Pedreira. If you’ve not ridden an e-bike before, our guides will make sure you’re comfortable with the controls before the ride begins.
You’ll explore central Madeira, visiting the coastal town of Camara de Lobos, the infamous miradouro at Cabo Girao, Eira do Serrado and the Nun’s Valley.
You’ll drive onto the Paul de Serra to walk the famous Rabacal trail to the 25 Fontes lagoon.
You’ll spend an afternoon with our guides on a half-day canyoning session.
You’ll walk the high mountain trail between Madeira’s two highest peaks - Pico do Arieiro (1818m) and Pico Ruivo (1861m).
For your final full day, you’ll head east to the beach at Praia da Garajau for a stand-up paddle boarding session. The calm waters of this protected nature reserve are ideal for beginners and our guides will be on hand to assist if this is your first time paddle boarding at sea.
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
