Madeira is considered by many to be one of the top hiking destinations in Europe. It’s a reputation that’s well deserved – the island has an enviable network of waymarked hiking trails – from its famous levadas and spectacular high mountain routes, to its lesser-known vineyard walks and coastal trails.
As a rough rule-of-thumb, the paths in the south and west tend to be more moderate and a little easier – in the north and east, they’re more suited to experienced walkers as their steep ravines and high cliffs require good head for heights.
We’ve put together a series of online Madeira Walking Guides and live route maps for our favourite routes across Madeira and it’s smaller neighbour Porto Santo.
To access our online GPS walking routes, you’ll need to install the Footpath app. It’s an excellent navigation tool which you can install and use for free. Here’s how to setup and make best use of the app, and if you have any problems with the setup, please don’t hesitate to get in touch:
- Download the Footpath app to your smartphone for free at https://footpathapp.com/.
- When prompted, allow the app to access your phone’s location services.
- You’ll also need location services turned on when you’re ready to begin walking.
- Pick your island from the list below and you’ll see a full list of our favourite routes.
- To access your chosen route, click on the appropriate Footpath route map link.
- The Footpath app should launch automatically, with the app showing your current location.
