Our seven-night holiday in Funchal is the perfect slice of Portuguese island life. Madeira has a wonderfully laid-back, relaxing pace of life which you can’t resist falling into within minutes of your arrival.

You’ll be staying in one of our favourite hotels in the city, the charming Quintinha Sao Joao – a short stroll/taxi ride from the main seafront Avenida do Mar, the marina and the Zona Velha Old Town restaurant district. The Quintinha’s own Restaurante Morgadinha has one of the best menus in the city and dinner’s on us for your first evening on the island.

You’ll have plenty of time to explore Funchal at your leisure – time to ride the Teleferico cable car and the famous Carro de Cesto taboggans, time to enjoy the city’s historic architecture, and time at sea with the island’s resident whales and dolphins. You’ll also head further afield with our local guide – to the beautifully-barren Sao Lourenco peninsula, the high summit of Pico Arieiro, and the forest levadas of the Ribeiro Frio nature park.

Our September Special Offer on Seven nights in Funchal is only available for a limited time – our advice is to book early. And don’t forget: all our 2021 holidays are protected by our COVID-promise – trust us to look after you.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday by flying direct from the UK to Madeira. You’ll be collected on arrival in Funchal by our driver for your transfer to Quintinha Sao Joao. Dinner’s on us at Quintinha’s own Restaurante Morgadinha.
You’ll spend your first full day on the island exploring downtown Funchal - the Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, the Museu Photographia Vicentes, Blandy’s wine lodge and the Zona Velha Old Town.
Our resident guide will show you the stunning scenery across eastern Madeira - the pretty villages of Camacha, Santana and Faial, the high summit of Pico do Arieiro (1816m), the forest park at Ribeiro Frio, the rum distillery at Porto da Cruz and the Ponta de Sao Lourenco peninsula.
You’ll explore Funchal’s beautiful botanical gardens at the Monte Palace and the Jardim Botanico at Quinta do Bom Sucesso, with a chance to ride the famous Carro de Cesto wicker toboggans.
Today’s free - you could personalise your holiday by adding a guided tour to one of Madeira’s most magnificent locations: the Curral das Freiras. This isolated ‘Nun’s Valley’ mountain hideaway is where the Sisters of Santa Clara famously took refuge from pirates in the 16th Century.
You’ll head to sea on a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip. The waters around Madeira are one of the best places to observe Atlantic-spotted dolphins, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles.
For your final full day on the island, it’s easy to add a tour to Madeira’s wild north coast - with visits to the Casacata Veu da Noiva waterfall, the Paul de Serra plateau, the natural swimming pools at Porto Moniz and the Volcanism Centre in Sao Vicente.
You'll be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
