Overview

Madeira has a great selection of hotels but if you’d prefer to relax in your own self-catering cottage, a seven night stay in Calheta is the perfect option.

Your home for the week will be a traditional-style cottage at Calhau Grande – owner Sofia has a great selection of one and two bedroom cottages which are ideal for both couples and families. Calhau Grande is in the quiet hamlet of Arco da Calheta on Madeira’s south-west coast – popular with Madeirans for it’s sunny micro-climate and it’s long & lazy sunsets.

We’ll include a hire car so you can explore the island’s magnificent landscapes and we’ll suggest all of our favourite things to see and do on Madeira.

If you’d prefer to self-cater and be closer to the bustling capital Funchal, take a look at our Family Holiday at Palheiro Village.

Itinerary

Fly from the UK to Madeira - our driver will collect you from your flight for your transfer to Calhau Grande.
Your hire car will be delivered and you can begin exploring the island. It’s a short drive to the most westerly point on the island: the lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo and the cascata da Garganta Funda waterfall; one of the highest waterfalls on Madeira.
Take a drive to Achadas da Cruz, to ride the teleferico cable car which connects the village with its farmlands 500m below on the rocky coast. Heading home, Calheta is home one of the island’s few surviving rum distilleries at Engenho da Calheta - the best place to buy the deliciously dark and sticky Bolo de Mel cake.
Explore Madeira's bustling capital city Funchal - visit the Monte Palace gardens and ride the famous Carro de Cesto taboggans.
Take a drive to Curral das Freiras (the Nun’s Valley), the famous miradouro at Eira do Serrado and the 580m high skywalk at Cabo Girao.
Head north to visit the Volcanism Centre and lava caves in Sao Vicente and the beautiful casacata Veu da Noiva waterfall. The nearby village of Porto Moniz is a good spot for lunch and one of the best natural swimming spots on the island.
Explore eastern Madeira and the town of Machico - the spot where Joao Goncalves Zarco and Trisao Vaz Texiera first landed when they (re)discovered the island on 1st July 1419.
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
