Our self-drive and Madeira Self-Guided Walking Holiday are a great combination if you want to be fully independent. Even though we have given you a few suggestions in the itinerary, you’re completely free to choose where and when you want to put on your boots. The only thing that is set is the accommodation on each night.

Madeira is a paradise for walkers, with a huge network of paths and tracks alongside levadas, in the higher mountains or along the rugged coastline. From gentle strolls to challenging vertiginous walks along ridges, you’re sure to enjoy your Madeira Self-Guided Walking Holiday adventure. Pick our brains and we can recommend the walks suited to your ability and requirements.

If you prefer to walk in a small group with other walkers or want to have a private guide, then let us know and we can arrange this for you – our Madeira Self-Guided Walking Holiday can be tailored to your exact needs.

Fly from Gatwick on a direct flight to Funchal. On arrival transfer to Hotel Penha Franca Mar and overnight in a twin room for one night
Your car will be delivered to your hotel. Drive to the peninsula of Sao Lourenco where there is a fantastic self-guided walk. Total duration approx 3 hours, don't forget to bring water and snacks. After the walk continue your drive and stop at the little seaside resort of Porto da Cruz, before finally arriving in Santana. Overnight at Hotel Quinta do Furao in a twin room for two nights.
After breakfast drive to Achada do Teixeira and walk to Madeira's highest peak - Pico Ruivo (1862m). Total duration approx. 3 hours. Talk to one of our Madeira specialists if you are interested in a longer walk. Don't forget to visit the quaint Casas de Colmo when you're driving back to your hotel.
Continue on the coastal road, which has plenty of fantastic photostops, to Sao Vicente. Beware some of the tunnels are very narrow and you may have to reverse. Again there are plenty of self-guided walks that you can do - please ask us for our advice. Your hotel - Solar da Bica - is on the outskirts of Sao Vicente. Overnight in a twin room for one night.
The next stretch along the coastal road is breathtakingly beautiful. Stop for lunch in the pretty village of Seixal, where you can visit the black sandy beach and see the impressive Veu da Noiva (Bridal Veil) waterfall. Continue along the road via the three rock formations of Ilheu da Ribeira da Janela (natural rock opening shaped like a window), to Porto Moniz. Overnight in a twin room with sea view for two nights.
There are a few things you can do today. Relax at the natural swimming pools of lava rock Piscinas Naturais, where the huge waves constantly wash over basin. Entrance is free. Or you could visit the aquarium, where there is the opportunity to do your first dive in the big tank. If you would like to walk again then we suggest you do the self-guided '25 Fontes levada walk' in the middle of the Paul da Serra plateau. This walk is very popular with daytrippers from Funchal so in order to avoid the crowds an early start is recommended.
Today you could either drive via the Paul da Serra plateau, and Encumedea (another great starting point for walks) to the lovely sea side town of Ponta do Sol. Or you could take the long, winding road along the west coast via Ponta do Pargo. Overnight at Hotel da Vila in a twin room for one night.
Your car will be picked up in the morning and you will have the rest of the day at leisure until it's time for your transfer to the airport.
