Overview

Get under the skin of this diverse island on our Madeira guided walking holiday.

Madeira is blessed with a dense network of walking routes, from the famous levadas trails to the high mountain paths. Our resident guides will show you the best trails on the island, and their local knowledge will lead you to the on off-the-beaten tracks that most visitors to Madeira never see.

You’ll be based in the sunny south-coast town of Ponta do Sol, and the island’s excellent road network makes it easy to explore by car. If you’d prefer to self-cater, we can personalise your trip with a stay at one of our comfortable villas. We’ve suggested a week’s stay – and it’s easy to extend your trip to ten nights or a full two weeks.

Itinerary

You'll start with a flight to Madeira. On arrival at Funchal airport one of our drivers will meet you and transfer you to your accommodation.
Your first private day with your guide. You'll meet this morning in your accommodation. Today will usually be an easier day of walking in order that there's time to get to know you, and time to plan the best week. You might for example walk from Machico to Porto da Cruz via the cliff paths, ending at the rum distillery and outdoor pool for the refreshment of your choice!
Private day with your guide. You might head for the dense forests of the interior, exploring ways rarely used and certainly off the tourist trail. Here, dry river beds become your paths - leading to unexpected trods through the forest, with wild swimming spots for the hardy!
Today's free to relax and explore at your own pace. We'll deliver a hire car to yout hotel - you might like to explore the friendly capital city Funchal.
Private day with your guide. The central mountains certainly draw the eyes, peaking at 1,862m. If you've a good head for heights - and the weather allows - then you might like your guide to lead you on a mountaineering expedition. You'll break away from the masses on the Pico do Arieiro - Pico Ruivo path scramble with ropes, our qualified guide leading you to a lesser-explored summit. On the way down, marvel at the narrow, exposed ancient paths once used by shepherds to traverse the peaks!
Private day with your guide. Today you might explore the north west of the island, transferring to the start of the network of trails that run from the Paúl da Serra all the way to the ocean at Porto Moniz.
Today's a free day to relax and explore at your own pace, armed with knowledge of the island from your days out with your guide.
You'll retrurn your hire car to the airport before flying home.
