Overview

The seaside village of Madalena do Mar is one of our favourite spots for a relaxing Madeira family holiday.

Madeira’s south coast is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There’s a natural calm to Madalena’s secluded bay, with it’s sunny micro-climate, rocky beachfront and peaceful promenande. The south coast’s excellent road network means it’s easy to explore the whole island by hire car (which is included in your trip). We’ll also include a whale and dophin watching trip during your stay, and you can personalise your holiday by adding more of our exciting activities.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday flying direct from the UK to Madeira. You’ll be collected on arrival in Funchal by our driver, for your transfer to Madalena do Mar. In the evening, there’s a nice selection of restaurants within easy walking distance.
We'll deliver a hire car and you can begin exploring the island, beginning with the island’s capital Funchal. You might like to take the Teleferico cable car fup to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, returning by Carro de Cesto – the famous wicker toboggans which run down the steep streets into Livramento. You'll head to the local marina in the afternoon for a whale and dolphin watching trip.
You might like to walk the Rabacal trail in one of most beautiful spots on the Madeira: the Laurisilva forests of the Rabaçal Valley.
Take a drive to the most westerly point on the island – to the lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo and the miradouro overlooking the 140m high cascata da Garganta Funda waterfall; one of the highest waterfalls on the island. You could spend the afternoon in Porto Moniz – one of the best swimming spots on the island.
You could spend today exploring eastern Madeira, with visits to Camacha, Pico do Arieiro and the forest park at Ribeiro Frio.
Take a drive through the Encumeada Tunnel to the village of Sao Vicente, for a visit the island’s Volcanism Centre and the Casacata Veu da Noiva: the Bridal Veil waterfall.
Spend your final full-day walking the Ponta de Sao Lourenco trail, followed by a visit to the town of Machico - the spot where Joao Goncalves Zarco and Trisao Vaz Texiera first landed when they (re)discovered the island on 1st July 1419.
You’ll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
