Our seven-night holiday in Funchal is the perfect slice of Portuguese island life.
Portugal’s capital Lisbon is great for art, music and grand architecture. Second-city Porto has it’s medieval roots and is the gateway to the country’s Douro wine region. Madeira’s capital Funchal offers something different – a more laid-back, relaxing island attitude and a slower pace of life which you can’t help falling into as soon as you arrive.
Sitting within a natural amphitheatre on the sunny south coast of the island, Funchal has the feel of a friendly town with a wonderfully-welcoming atmosphere. We’ll normally recommend a stay at one of our favourite hotels in the city – the charming Quintinha Sao Joao; it’s a short walk/taxi ride from the main seafront Avenida do Mar, the marina, and the famous Zona Velha restaurant district. You’ll have time to explore the city – time to ride the teleferico cable car and the Carro de Cesto taboggans, to take a tour of the Blandy wine lodge and to head to sea on a whale and dolphin watching trip.
You can also personalise your holiday with stay at Quinta da Casa Branca, Quinta Jardins do Lago or the classic Belmond Reid’s Palace, and you could explore further afield by including one of our private guided tours to the dramatic east coast or the mountains of the far north west.
