Madeira is deemed a low risk holiday destination and will be exempt from a travel quarantine from Saturday 4th July. The Madeiran regional government moved quickly to lockdown the island at the start of the outbreak – their strong lockdown measures and the sacrifices made by the local population have helped to contain the virus to ninety two cases with no fatalities. Tourism is crucial to the local economy, and the regional government is still feeling it’s way in uncertain times – trying to find a balance between support for the local economy, whilst ensuring the health and well-being of the islanders.
Although travellers from England won’t be required to isolate on their return home, there are a number of important practicalities to consider before visiting the island:
Clean and Safe.
Portugal’s excellent Clean and Safe scheme means all of our hotels are ready to receive guests, with their teams already up to speed on their new post-COVID standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
The reception teams at each of our hotels will talk you through their preventative measures at check-in, and you’ll see all of the usual signage and social distancing indicators in the public areas of the hotel. All room surfaces, furniture and en-suite bathrooms are regularly cleaned and disinfected, with particular attention to elements with a high level of contact such as doorknobs, taps etc., and bed linen and towels are washed with certified bio-contamination liquids. There will also be a continuous sanitation of the public areas of the hotels, with PPE and disinfectant hand gel available.
easyJet, Jet2 and British Airways operate direct flights to Madeira and their respective schedules all restart in the last week of July. It’s possible they’ll be quick to react to the exemption announcement and may add more July flights. In reality, it’s going to take a couple of weeks for both the airlines and the airports to get to grips with their new post-COVID procedures.
With all of the above in mind – if you’re considering a holiday to Madeira this year, our current recommendation is to aim for September onwards. If you’d like to begin planning your trip, call our Madeira experts now on 017687 21070.
